The rapidity with which you recover from adversity. The capacity to recover
quickly from difficulties.

There’s no shortage of challenges we face as queer people. From the interpersonal, to political, familial, romantic and the workplace.

There’s also no doubt — we will face hardships, discrimination, and stressors throughout our lives. Even as we make progress in society at large. Even when the wind seems to be at our back.

The question is:

  • What does resilience look like for us as queer people?

  • How do we cultivate resilience?

  • What practices can we add into our lives?

The actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method, as opposed to theories relating to it. Doing more than thinking.

We all practice something.

Among queer folks, substance use and abuse continues to be one of the ways we cope with minority stress, discrimination, and simply being our queer selves in a straight world.

Aside from substances, food, working, exercising, perfection, and people-pleasing can be other ways we try and navigate and deal with the many stressors we face as queer people.

This series helps us contemplate:

  • Which practices serve my well-being?

  • What healthy practices could I add to my life?

  • What are other queer folks practicing?

at the present time or moment. not then or down the road. neither in the past or in the future. neither behind or ahead.

While we can’t change our past or control the future, we can decide how we show up in this very moment.

By cultivating a practice, we have something to call upon when life gets tough. In those moments when things don’t go as planned or we’re on the receiving end of someone else’s pain or anger.

In my own life, I’ve had numerous practices: prayer, meditation, reading, and writing. I also have been on Zoloft and had visits with therapists over the years.

As a queer, non-binary Enneagram teacher and Yoga Therapist, Robins is working tirelessly to bring quality teaching in both areas to the queer community. Abi seeks to empower sexual and gender minorities with self-understanding, self-compassion and embodied practices to heal from the trauma inherent in existing on the margins. Robins also hopes to educate other Yoga and Enneagram teachers on how to best serve the queer community through their own teaching.

Dominique Cowling

Dominique is extremely passionate about sharing tools for emotional, mental and physical wellness with an accessibility and trauma sensitive lens. She focuses on bringing mindfulness and body centered practices to communities of color and lgbtqi+ folks that have historically faced and continue to experience the impacts of trauma and oppression.
